What is LabPen?
LabPen is a full laboratory ordering solution using Digital Pen and Paper to record all the information written data on a laboratory requisition.
How is LabPen used?
Your lab client uses LabPen to fill out a lab requisition.
Then LabPen is placed in a docking station... THAT IS IT!
What Happens next?
The pen strokes are automatically retrieved from the pen and securely transmitted via the Internet to the LabPen validation software at the laboratory. Minutes later... At the Lab, an exact replica of the order requisition is presented on a workstation for laboratory staff to validate.
LabPen Validation Software
Using industry leading handwriting recognition tools, the handwritten form is interpreted into text. The image original order and the recognized text are presented in a side by side view to laboratory staff. The user then tabs through the list verifying the interpretation and quickly re-typing any misinterpreted fields. In addition to the full requisition image, the handwritten information of each field is presented to the user above each interpreted text field in a validation window. The user can zoom in on any area of the order form to aid in validating the data. Once the requisition is validated the order information can either be printed or converted to HL7 and sent via an interface directly to the labs LIS system.
Special Features of the Validation Software
Early validation of the order allows identification of missing or incorrect information on the requisition long before the specimen arrives at the laboratory. The user can place a requisition on hold for customer service or supervisory intervention. Issues get resolved the same day, BEFORE YOU GET THE SAMPLE.
But what happens if the Physician’s Internet goes down?
The system uses multi-part forms just like your standard forms. The paper copy of the order arrives at the lab with the sample. This provides the lab with the a time-proven and reliable back up system … Pen and Paper !!!
